This weekend Music Within had their first concert at the Glen Cove Senior Center Adult Day Program. Our goal was to help our participants connect with their love of music, and step out of their quiet persona. I observed a group sitting around a table, begin to engage with each other, and allow music to transform heir experience. our Moto at Music within is to focus not only on observation, but participation by our audience. by distributing instruments to our crowd we saw the connection to the music come alive. Some used the instruments or their voices, and others simply moved to the beat of the music. All of this shows tremendous progress and understanding of our music and what we tried to communicate. This brought joy, not only to the participants, but us as the performers as we saw the group light up in front of our eyes. by the end we were able to see a tighter connection within the group as they all shared this experience of music together.
We played a mix of classical and generational music, and the participants were able to connect to the feeling of the specific music we played. We especially enjoyed watching the participants sing along to songs like, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" as well as 'Happy Birthdays" to some of our participants. It made our day to hear that we had made a difference in the overall mood of the participants at the end of the concert. not only did the participants connect with our music, but we were able to connect to the participants as well. Seeing the participants engaged and smiling, made us feel so thankful for the opportunity to play for such a wonderful group.
